Crash kills 2 brothers, Child Protective Services employee

A tragic crash took the lives of two children and a caseworker with Child Protective Services (CPS) who was driving them back to their foster families after a counseling session on Oct. 30. The brothers, ages 10 and 14, were in the vehicle with their 12-year-old sister. She survived, but was listed in critical condition in a Dallas hospital.

According to state troopers, the crash occurred near Edgewood on State Highway 19. They say a 19-year-old driver was using a no-passing lane while attempting to pass the vehicle driven by the 61-year-old CPS employee when he struck them head-on.

The three siblings had been living with their grandmother and her husband in Canton after being taken from their parents, who live in Ohio. The precise circumstances of their removal from their parents weren't reported. However, their mother says that she had been undergoing treatment for cancer.

They'd just recently been removed from their grandmother's home after they complained about abuse and the conditions in which they lived. The Van Zandt Sheriff's Office also seized more than 100 animals from that residence.

The CPS caseworker's son said that his mother, who'd been with the department for a decade, had chosen to return to school when she was in her 50s. She had also been caring for her parents. Her father just recently passed away. Her son said, "I'm very, very proud of her for all she's done, all she's accomplished and all the different lives she's touched."

The driver of the other vehicle and his 16-year-old passenger were hospitalized, However, their injuries weren't reported to be life-threatening. The driver hasn't yet been charged, and authorities are still investigating the crash.

No amount of money can lessen the pain of the senseless death of a loved one. However, a wrongful death suit can provide compensation that can help cover medical and burial costs as well as other expenses. It can also hold those responsible liable for pain and suffering and perhaps serve as a deterrent to others who might not otherwise think twice before acting in such a reckless manner.
